Forest governance & trade (FLEGT) and forest sector reforms

Some of the recent assignments undertaken by Acacia in the field of forest governance include:

  • Team Leader on evaluation of the EC-funded Forest Governance Learning Group initiative, being implemented across ten countries in Africa and Asia (with visits to Mozambique, Uganda and Vietnam)

  • Team member on appraisal of Finnish government support to the forest sector in Kenya

  • Team Leader on re-design of forest sector reform programme in Kenya (Miti Mingi Maisha Bora)

  • Design of a national conditional block grant mechanism to local governments with the objective of supporting community based natural resources management across mainland Tanzania
    Client – Government of Norway
  • Team member on a scoping study for the preparation of a National Biomass Energy Strategy in Tanzania
    Client – GTZ, Germany
  • Prepared a policy brief on the importance of stakeholder participation in the development of National Forest Programmes
    Client – Food and Agriculture Organisation, Rome, Italy
  • Team leader on final evaluation of the joint World Bank, FAO, IIED and IUCN “Growing Forests Partnership” programme, with visits to Ghana, Liberia and Guatemala
  • Team leader for a review of The Forests Dialogue, for the period 2000 – 2013.

  • Evaluation of the work of the DFID-EU funded Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Facility, hosted by the European Forest Institute

  • Team leader for final evaluation of the WWF Denmark / FAO-FLEGT Facility-funded Sustainable Forest Management Programme implemented by Worldwide Fund for Nature, Uganda Country Office

  • Team leader for a five-country study to assess timber trade flows, actors and impacts of illegal logging with a view to developing appropriate FLEGT actions for WWF UK and partners in Indonesia, Malaysia, Ghana, Central African Republic and Colombia

  • Team leader for evaluation of the EU-FAO FLEGT Programme that supports forest governance reforms and voluntary partnership agreement (VPA) processes in 33 countries worldwide.
